Time for school supplies. Don't forget to look for all the sales and stock up.
Remember to think of the spring semester. When they need new notebooks, have lost all their pencils and everything is full price.

couponsanta - thank you for the heads up on the pencils/pens deal. I was able to take advantage of it today and I'm thrilled to spend under $2 for 9 packs of pens and pencils. The deal is for no 2 pencils, mechanical pencils and ball point pens with a limit of 3 each. I've been on the lookout for school supplies ever since I got my kids' supply lists back in April. I like being able to slowly chip away at the list as I see deals pop up and have time to look through my stash at home. I figure if things goes on sale for cheaper I can always return them. Organized Home has a good article on back to school shopping as well.

For those of you shopping the Walgreens sale for pens, make sure you keep an eye out for how things ring up. Just because they're an advertised sale item doesn't mean it'll ring up right. Take the PaperMate pens for example. I grabbed a pack of blue and a pack of black ink pens. The blue ones rang up correctly at 19 cents but the black ink pens rang up $1.49. I have no idea why the different ink rang up differently since the ad does not specify ink color on sale.

cupcakeninja - I had the exact same problem at my Walgreen's. When I asked the cashier why she informed me because I had reached the limit of 3. I had only bought 1 other package of pens and already had 3 packages of pencils - but since it was limit 3 EACH - I thought I was good. Long story short when she rang up my other pack of blue pens they rang up at the correct price even though I was "over the limit"

Hey, Cupcakeninja - thanks so much for the link to the Organized Home website. I really enjoyed that!
I may have to make a special trip to WAGS this week (the closest store is 40 miles away) for the pens/pencils. What a great deal! Do y'all think they have limited quantities and they'll be out when I get there?

They might. But it wouldn't hurt to give the store a call and ask them if they are in stock and if they could hold some for you?
If not - you could drive there and get a raincheck (but that doesn't make as much sense)...

It's also nice to pick up some extra and donate them to the class for some kids that don't have it.

I went back to Walgreens today to get some more pencils and such and it turns out that it's the blue AND black ink pens are on sale, not just blue. My husband just grabbed the wrong ones. Does anyone think if Office Depot or Staples will have them during their 1 cent sales later on? I've kept my receipt just in case though. One Walgreens I went to was cleared out! If you have a Walgreens in your area that's a bit older and "dumpier" I'd go to that one to get the pens etc. The nicer one I went to had nothing left.

I just back from Wal-Mart and they have their school supplies out and marked down.
I spent $10 and got: 3 boxes of Crayola 24ct crayons - 30 cents each 3 bottles of glue - 30 cents each 3 packs of glue sticks (2 per pack) - 30 cents each a calculator - $1 4 packs of paper - 75 cents each
I homeschool, so we really don't use all of the normal school supplies that public school kids do. I didn't see them advertise it in the ads or anything. We just happened to go there today and found them setting it up.

Yep! Walmart do have their school supplies out but the sales haven't hit yet. While some of their supplies are a bit lower priced, they are still the "normal every day low price" for the season. Their sales don't hit until just before school starts and after school has started. Still, their prices are lower than other places. It's good to stock up on what you need now though when things are in stock. Make sure you keep your receipts so if you see other places with sales (such as Office Depot and Staples with their 1 cent sales) you can stock up again then and return the Walmart stash if necessary. Things like 4 oz bottles Elmer's glue always goes on sale for 1 cent a bottle at Office Depot. It's part of their take a loss item to get customers into their stores. But of course my kids' teachers always require the 8 oz glue...which never goes on sale. I can't get them to understand that at 1 cent/4 oz glue, I can get them 170 bottles vs 1 bottle of 8 oz glue at $1.70. *sigh*

We normally travel to about an hour to the next city so we can go to Staples when they have their sales on school supplies. **I live in a little town where the only big stores we have are Wal-Mart and Roses. And Roses just moved in a couple of weeks ago. We have no movie rental stores but we have 1 red box located inside of Wal-Mart. The only clothing stores are Wal-Mart and Goodwill.**

You know how stores put limits on the really great school supply deals? Well, I discovered today that if you are a teacher, Office Max allows you to get 2x the limit! So, for example, Office Max had boxes of pencils on sale today for 10c a box, with a limit of 3 - if you're a teacher, you can buy 6!
